Creative Solution for Colon Health

Scene: Your friend invites you over for dinner and, as expected during the course of a lovely evening of food, drink and conversation, you excuse yourself to use the restroom. You walk into the bathroom and tucked comfortably around the base of the toilet bowl is a small footstool. “Do they have a child I didn’t know about,” you ask yourself in a moment of confusion? You near the stool to investigate further and find the words “Squatty Potty” on its label. You’ve heard of this “Squatty Potty” before, but you’re not quite sure what to make of it. What is your first thought? “Well this is embarrassing, now I think my friends may have bowel problems,” or perhaps, “How fabulous! A method for enhancing my own bathroom experience. I must have one!”

I’ve had my own Squatty Potty for a few months now, and I love it! Whether my guests consider it a conversation piece or a strange bathroom appliance, I would be happy to tell any of them about the many health benefits the Squatty Potty might offer them. The idea behind this clever invention is that squatting is the proper physiological position for humans to eliminate, but years of sitting on toilets has taken its toll on the bowel health of many of us.  Researchers have shown that when we stand or sit, the rectum is bent at an angle that does not support easy evacuation of the colon. Squatting, on the other hand, allows the rectum to straighten out and…voilá! Think about it, until the debut of a raised toilet which necessitated sitting (circa 1600 according to Time), humans weren’t lounging in the bathroom reading Consumer Reports while they struggled to go to the bathroom for 20 minutes. So what were they doing? Squatting!

The Squatty Potty is a small stool that can be used to raise the feet 9 inches or 7 inches off the ground (depending on the model you prefer), bringing the body into a squat or semi-squat position. This position takes pressure off the rectum and allows for easy elimination. Spend less time in the bathroom, have cleaner bathroom experience and say goodbye to straining, bloating, constipation and hemorrhoids! Check out the Squatty Potty website to watch an excellent video explaining the benefits and functionality of the Squatty Potty, which is available in three models, including a beautiful bamboo design. Enjoy!

  1. Funny you should post this now since I just spent three weeks in China using squatty potties. I must admit though that it was a little unnerving the first time I entered the stall and saw…nothing! The squatty potties in China are “flush” with the floor (ha), like little porcelain toilet pots built into the floor. Honestly, they probably help people maintain the muscle tone in their legs…and perhaps elsewhere too! The only thing that bothered me about them was that sometimes people sort of miss the target and it gets on the foot pads. Of course then it is getting on the bottom of your shoes instead of on your bottom like what happens when you sit on a wet toilet seat here in the land of Western style toilets. Ok, I think I’ll just stop right there. But if anyone wants to read more about the experience in China, you can read our blog at the address below.
